Kiddin' Around

It was hard to tell when Spring started this year, after what felt like a long winter, but the moment February came around, a fresh start was needed while slowly emerging from hibernation: that would be Harry the Giant African Land Snail who has the luxury of hibernating! It has felt like a never ending cycle of storms and persistent raindrops but despite the muck and need of welly boots, our own little Spring baby, Bahar, arrived on February 1st 2024. Bahar, Persian for "Spring": بَهار

However, this moment of our first kid born at Little Ones Microsanctuary is not the beginning. It was Autumn, October 18th, when a knock on the door would lead us to a family of goats in desperate need of care. In a garden, curled up under a hedge out of the rain, a little boy and his mum were shivering and fearful. A little girl cowering further down the garden path looked as if she didn't belong, alone and shivering so scared that approaching her took time. The mum vomiting, clear signs of laurel poisoning, needed emergency veterinary care. They had been dumped overnight, their lives at risk of toxic garden plants and nowhere to go, these three individuals were in need. Once safe at Little Ones a closer look and veterinary assessment found them to be malnourished, leg injury, foot rot and pneumonia.

They had no names: to name them felt as if we wouldn't let them go but being a microsanctuary means we are a small. With not even half an acre and self funding, we worried about taking them in permanently. And as we figured things out, discovering there was a fourth goat hidden away inside her mum.....we named them: Marilyn, Stanley and Lilith. And, as I opened their barn door on February 1st, seeing a little girl standing amongst the others, our herd grew.

Eight and a half years of adopting, rescuing and giving a home to those in need. Many years of happiness, struggles, illnesses and death....we returned to show you how mighty a microsanctuary can be.

A new start, a new beginning for Little Ones Microsanctuary 🐾
